With deep regret, I write to inform you of the death of our Confrere, Brother Richard S. Spencer, C.S.S. Brother Richard died at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA on June 25, 2008. He was 79 years old. Brother Richard was the only Religious Brother of our Province of the Holy Spouses. Brother Richard was the son of his deceased parents, Lynn L. and Edna J. (Benti). He leaves one sister, Elaine Hughes, and her husband, Donald, of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.
Brother Richard was born on March 28, 1929 in Fulton, New York. He attended Phoenix High School in Fulton and the I.T.L. Vocational Training School in Syracuse, New York. He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps and a convert to Catholicism. He entered the Stigmatine Community in Newton, MA on November 16, 1984, professed his first vows on March 19, 1986 and his final profession of vows on June 12, 1989. For most of his religious life, Brother Richard was stationed in Waltham and served the Community in many capacities. He ran the Print Shop for the Community for many years.
Brother Richard’s Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Espousal Center Chapel on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. His Wake will precede the Funeral Mass from 9:00 to 10:45 A.M. He will be buried at Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery, Milford, MA, following the Funeral at 1:30 P.M.
Brother Richard was a quiet, reserved person who always offered his best in any assignment. He was always ready to assist anyone in anyway. He was especially devoted to visiting our ill confreres. He was kind and gentle and highly respected by all. The Stigmatine Community will deeply feel his loss.
