In 1908 pope Pius X called him to teach Sacred Scripture in the Seminary of Perugia. Pope Benedict XV appointed him executive in the Institute for the Works of Religion. In 1939 Pope Pius XII chose him as an assistant in the Administration of the Holy See. Pope John XXIII created him a Cardinal, donating him his own ‘red cap’ (‘zucchetto’) at the end of the Conclave which elected him as a pontiff.
